Latest News: Selective Seafoods adopts Humane Dispatching of Crabs and Lobsters

Demonstrating the Crustastun

Selective Seafoods are the FIRST suppliers of humanely dispatched crabs and lobsters in North Wales. The designers of the new humane crustacean dispatching Crustastun, Simon and Charlotte Buckhaven, of Studham Technology Ltd, Bedfordshire, came to Ffridd Wen to demonstrate their invention to a group which included Gareth, Mary, Sion, Jane. Also present were 3 representatives of Gwynedd Environmental Health who were interested in finding out about this new technology.

The Crustastun was very easy and straightforward to set up and within a few minutes Gareth and Mary were able to operate it themselves. This is a major investment for our small self funded business and we have always worked to the highest standards and, along with Sion, the secretary of the Llyn Pot Fishermen’s Association, are working towards a more sustainable fishery off the Llyn Peninsula.

We are now proud to employ this latest technology and we acknowledge the need to keep pace with current thinking on animal welfare. Most of all, we want to supply the best locally sourced crabs and lobsters and we believe this method of dispatching crabs and lobsters will help us to continue to bring the Best of Llyn to our customers.

Sion trying the Crustastun

Its one thing for someone to tell you that crustaceans despatched in this new way actually taste better, but another to try it yourself. So Gareth and Mary did a taste test. Mary was confused as she genuinely thought crab dispatched in the traditional manner tasted better, until Gareth admitted that he had switched the crabs when she wasn’t looking to make the test more reliable! The test was repeated with lobster and the humanely dispatched one again tasted noticeably better.

We were so impressed by the genuine improvement in quality and flavour that we have now secured our own Crustastun and all our crabs and lobsters are now dispatched using this compassionate, humane procedure that has been backed by a wide range of organisations such as the RSPCA, the EFSA, the HSA and the Shellfish Association. Recently Waitrose, Tesco and major supermarkets have insisted that all shellfish products supplied to them are dispatched using this method. So don’t take our word for it – try it for yourself. We are also happy to demonstrate the Crustastun.
